API (Automated Processes Inc.), founded in 1968 by Saul Walker in New York City, is a renowned American manufacturer of professional audio equipment. The company quickly established itself as a leader in the industry with its innovative designs and high-quality products, particularly in the realm of mixing consoles and signal processing equipment.

In the early years, API introduced the 512 preamp module and the 550A equalizer, which became staples in recording studios due to their robust design and superior sound quality. These modules were part of API’s modular console systems, which allowed for easy customization and maintenance.

One of API’s most significant contributions to the audio industry was the development of the 500 Series format. This modular system allowed audio engineers to mix and match preamps, equalizers, and other processing units in a compact and portable format. The 500 Series quickly became an industry standard, and many other manufacturers adopted the format for their own products.

Throughout the 1970s, API continued to innovate with products like the 1604 and 2488 recording consoles, which were widely used in major recording studios around the world. The company’s consoles were known for their distinctive sound, characterized by the use of discrete op-amps and transformers, which provided a rich, warm, and punchy audio quality.

In the 1980s, API faced financial difficulties and underwent several ownership changes. Despite these challenges, the company maintained its reputation for quality and innovation. In the 1990s, API was revitalized under new ownership, and the company reintroduced many of its classic products while also developing new ones.

The 2000s saw API continue to expand its product line with the introduction of the Vision console, a state-of-the-art recording and mixing console that combined modern digital control with classic analog signal processing. API also released the popular A2D, a dual-channel preamp with built-in A/D conversion, catering to the needs of modern digital recording environments.

Today, API remains a leading manufacturer of professional audio equipment, known for its commitment to quality and innovation. The company’s products, including the 1608 console, the 512c preamp, and the 550A equalizer, are used by top recording engineers and studios worldwide. API’s dedication to preserving the classic analog sound while embracing new technologies has solidified its place as a cornerstone of the professional audio industry.
